THE KILLER ORANGE
By LEON STEVENS
Now that it seems certain that Anita Bryant's contract with the Florida citrus growers will remain intact, at least until August, 1978, it's time we took a sober look at the "Sunshine State's" over-rated product, virtually the only thing besides palm trees which will grow in ancient, barren pulverized coral deposits.
Citrus fruit must be transported to the northeastern United States over a greater distance than most other popular fruit (except bananas and pineapples which are shipped by sea or flown in), Storage after picking, poor refrigeration during transport (usually by truck), stockpiling before processing and further storage by wholesalers, retailers and finally consumers makes some degree of putrification inevitable in the orange juice we drink. This decay is disguised by sweetening, too-late preservatives and the inherent acidity of the product.

picked indiscriminately and poorly examined, if at all. Infected and diseased oranges may easily find their way into (your?) orange juice. Some forms of harmful bacteria, if allowed to mature, can form spores which are resistant to pasteurization and chemical preservatives.
Most orange crops are picked before they are ripe. The greenish-yellow spheres may be dyed to make them look more appealing for eating purposes or squeezed into juice. (Following last winter's frost in Florida, wilted green oranges were hastily converted to juice).
Orange juice is a highly acidic beverage, especially when manufactured from premature oranges. Large amounts of citric and other natural acids can interfere with digestion and can even cause harm to the stomach lining over a period of time. (Citrus juices are recommended by antique dealers for polishing metals). It should certainly not be consumed in stressful situations or by persons with hyperactive stomachs!
All fruit and vegetable juices are juices that are diarrhetic, especially orange juice. Undigestable cellulose particles discourage osmotic absorption

of water into the intestinal walls, keeping fecal material aqueous. In addition, the peculiar acidity of orange juice destroys yeastlike bacteria which solidify fluid substances passing through the intestinal tract (For this reason there are no citrus wines, as wine depends on yeast for fermentation). Orange juice should never be consumed in large quantities or as a "thirst quencher!"
Oranges fall into the category of common allergies. Along with chocolate and walnuts, oranges and grapefruits are a leading cause of pimples. Age is not a factor in allergy-induced blemishing. Tolerance to oranges varies so that mildly affected people may not be aware that minor skin eruptions are due to oranges. Even orange fragments in pastries, cakes or beverages (such as "Constant Comment," for example) can trigger an an unsightly dermatological response.
Dr. Jonas Salk's contention that Vitamin C prevents the common cold has been challenged and discredited by many of his colleagues in medicine. Even he admits that his speculation has no foundation in research. In any case, true believers can find as much (or more) vitamin C in fruit drinks and beverages such as Tang" as they can in orange juice. This fact coupled with the ready availability of pure vitamin C in drug stores makes orange juice a rather primitive source of the chemical.

Orange and grapefruit seeds are small enough to go unnoticed by small children but large enough to become lodged in their throats, choking them. Whole oranges and grapefruits should not be given to a young child!
Most vegetable and fruit juices produced from plants grown locally are likely to be fresher, more sanitary and more nutritious than orange derivatives. Tomato, apple, cranberry, apricot, carrot and other juices, whole fruits and vegetables, besides offering more variety than boring orange juice, contain a wider assortment of complex organic nutriens. Apples contain pectin, an anti-diarrhetic. Bananas are non-laxative but also nonconstipating. Some scientists now believe that grape juice contains valuable diseasefighting agents. Local fresh fruits contain individual and distinctive health-giving properties against which stale, beatento-death OJ. can hardly compete.
In short, why poison yourself supporting Anita Bryant when you can build up your body supporting local business? Four months ago, before gay bars began boycotting orange juice, patrons at two separate Cleveland bars reported having received spoiled, rancid screwdrivers. Is orange juice worth it?
